Painting a Whole New Future--Without Oil?

What about unconventional oil reserves?
Unconventional Oil Reserves

Oil companies promise trillions of barrels from conventional and unconventional oil reserves:
- Conventional oil refers to oil pumped out of the ground with minimal processing
- Unconventional oil resources consist largely of tar sands and oil shales that require processing to extract liquid petroleum.
Examples of unconventional oil reserves are the:
Getting to it is the problem. Off the Gulf of Mexico, the U.S. is investing $300,000 a day to drill two to six miles below the Earth's surface to recover 100 million barrels of conventional oil.
It takes only six days for Americans to consume that much!
CloseWhat are we doing?
I want to believe that "the powers that be" have thought about viable solutions.
But if they had, wouldn't they have started doing something already?
I'm angry at the world's fear and denial. Ours is a generation that must deal with this horrible mess.
Our generation should start thinking about jobs that will be needed—anything that can prolong our survival. I worry that's what life is going to be about when we hit the oil production peak: survival.
What Kind of Jobs? When we hit the oil production peak, jobs will be about survival. Right now, before it's too late, we have to make other arrangements for the normal activities of everyday life.
We'll likely need more people in health care, emergency response, environmental studies, politics, and farming.
CloseI'm changing careers

"Most of us live our lives as if the oil will never run out...maybe we have to change."
—Angela
It's incredibly hard for me to dream about working as an art teacher—something I've known I wanted to do since eighth grade—when I think about oil production peak.
I Want to be an Artist!
My grandfather was an artist and I've always connected with art:
- My art teachers inspired me to want to teach it.
- I've shown my art in a local gallery.
- I was president of the National Art Honor Society in high school.
CloseI'm preparing for a drastic change in my career path. I'm changing careers because I think I don't have a choice!
I'm going to go back to school to pursue a different career path. Instead of taking classes in art, I'm going to earn my certification as a nursing assistant (CNA).
It's nothing I ever dreamed about or even imagined doing before I learned about world oil peak production. I think having my CNA certificate will be practical when we reach peak oil.
After I earn that degree, I'm going to return to school for my degree in art education. This decision makes me sad but, right now, I don't feel like I have the choice to just be an artist and an art teacher.
And that's not all...
