There's always something mystical about getting on planes—they take you to see people you love...or to unfamiliar and exotic locales.

I've traveled to Ireland, Poland, and Thailand—and I'm only 17 years old. I've been to Canada too, but that wasn't as much of a culture shock.

The most important part about traveling is being prepared for where you're going. If you prepare yourself right, you will be guaranteed to have a good trip!

Study your destination

The first step is to research your destination. Find out all about it:

Talk to people who have been there or even lived there and you might learn about places that even the tour guides don't know about.

For instance, in Thailand the local people ("locals") told us where to eat.

Following their advice, we found some of the best pad thai (the traditional food of Thailand) in a small, out-of-the-way restaurant that few people knew about.

Before you go, you could also try reading an insider's guide. This is different from a tour guide, in that it has more detailed information and helpful facts about the area.

Make a list of everything you want to do while you're there. Then, you'll be sure to complete all the goals that you had before you left.
