The College Life: Shilpa's Story

My friends and I like to hangout right next to our college.
Next to Our College
The thing we love the most—HANGING OUT!
My college has only five floors of classrooms, a bowling center opposite college, restaurants, roadside juice shops and roadside chaat stalls right next to my college.
A movie hall is pretty close to my college. If we drive for 10 minutes, we can get to the Marina Beach, which is the second longest beach in the world after the Miami Beach. Most of the old people go to Marina Beach.
Elliot's Beach is five minutes away from my house and that's where most young people hang out. It's lined with fast food joints, small stores, and a few shrines.
Close Favorite hangouts
Music is a big deal to students—at home and when we're out.
We have a lot of hangouts right next to our college. We often go there with our friends to work on our presentations for the intercollegiate culturals.
After we're finished with our work, we like to have a bite to eat and listen to music.
Friday night is ladies' night in most of the pubs and discos. That means free entry and free drinks.
Not that we do this every Friday. Most weekends we end up sitting at home and watching TV and working on our projects and submissions, or our internship.
Projects and Submissions
Group projects are fun! We love fun!"
My friends and I work on our projects together sometimes
Every semester, we have to work on projects related to our course. I had to do a lot of research on prostitution in India, and about how women are being treated.
One of my other projects is about the difference in the upbringing of children with two working parents and children with only one working parent.
These projects carry credits and look good on our resumes.
Close I Love Chick Flicks!
I'm a big-time movie buff. I see all the movies that release on Friday during the weekend.
My favorite kinds of movies are comedy films, romantic movies and war movies.
Some of my top movies are Shrek, Finding Nemo, Scary Movie 3, Freaky Friday, The Great Escape and Where the Eagles Dare. I love chick flicks!
Since I live in South India, movies are in the main language, Tamil, along with Hindi (our national language) and English. There are loads of languages to choose from so it's difficult to choose a movie.
So Many Languages There are more than 1,650 main languages in India. My mother tongue is Tamil and our national language is Hindi.
I can read, speak and write Tamil and English; and can read, write and understand Hindi. I also learned French.
At home, I speak in Tamil with my family. Sometimes, we converse in English. I speak in both English and Tamil with my friends.
Close Always in touch

Sharanya needs a service provider that gives free unlimited messages!
Music is important to students like me. The latest trend is to have the most current camera/MP3 mobile phone and use a service provider that gives you free unlimited messages.
We need all that cool stuff to entertain us and cheer us up when we are bored or stressed out.
Service ProviderMost mobile plans are offered with free unlimited messaging.
Incoming calls and messages are free, but we pay 10 Paise (100 Paise are the equivalent of two to three Cents in U.S. money) for outgoing calls.
We pay 50-100 Paise for messages sent to other states in India.
Close I can't live without my phone—it's part of my body. We spend a lot of money recharging or paying postpaid bills for our mobile phones. A lot of girls have two SIM cards for their phones.
SIM CardsThis is the card that we insert in our mobile phones for the connection to function. They are reasonable—about 300 Rupees ($about $7.42) per month. Most students go for prepaid SIMs and many have two.
One is their official mobile number that their family knows. The other is exclusively for their boyfriend and other friends—people whose existence should not be known by the person's parents. I know at least 27 girls who have two SIM cards.
SIM plans are useful for those who want to send a minimum of 200 messages per day and make 10 calls per hour and talk on the phone for 24 hours.
Well, all of us require these plans! We need to message our friends every two minutes even though they sit right beside us.
Close And that's why people go for part-time jobs. We have to earn money so we can buy SIM cards (worth 200 Rupees or about $5), and recharge them (for a minimum of 330 Rupees or about $8).
Part-Time Jobs Most college students in India take up part-time jobs—selling stuff, promoting products, radio jockeying…
With a part-time job, students can earn 1,200-3,000 Rupees (around $30-$74) per month and not be completely dependent on their parents.
We also pay our semester exam fees with the money.
Close Keeping an eye on the bigger picture
I think most students know why they're at college and take it seriously, doing their coursework and applying for internships.
Internships are a Great Experience! Internships, or on-the-job training, are something all of us look forward to.
We gain a lot of knowledge and sometimes earn money. They're also good exposure.
But there is a lot of competition to get an internship. Students from various departments try out for the same firms and the firm chooses the best.
The number and type of projects and work we've done really matter on our resumes.
Close Today, I realize that it's not all about partying and socializing and having fun! I really love my courses.
Even though I realize I have to work hard, I celebrate the fact that I am no longer a young child who is completely dependent on my parents.
I am partly independent! Sweet Independence
Independent women
My friends and I take a boat ride in on the backwaters near Kumarakom, a small town famous for its scenic beauty, in Kerala, South India. We are: Jaya, me, Janani, and Ramya
I wasn't always very independent. I used to depend on my parents for everything.
But when I came to college, I found that everyone has jobs and that people earn their own gadgets, clothes, shoes, etc.
I got a part-time job so I could pay my semester exam fees. I even earned enough money to get myself a laptop and a mobile phone. And I realize this just because I am in college!

True or False: Franklin called the Gulf Stream a "river in the ocean."
Click Ben's head for the answer.
TRUE: Franklin was particularly interested in the Gulf Stream, a fast-moving current of warm surface water that sweeps up from Florida, along the continental slope off the US East Coast, and then bends eastward across the North Atlantic all the way to Europe. Franklin was the first to refer to the Gulf Stream as a "river in the ocean."
