While the Moolah Rouge
exists only in the pages of Googolplex, the Moulin Rouge
is an actual entertainment hall in Paris. Founded in 1889, the
Rouge featured ornately costumed dancers and other exotic performers.
The elaborately decorated building includes a large red windmill
on its roof, and rightfully so -- the name 'Moulin Rouge' is
French for 'red mill.'
Many famous people
have been patrons of the Moulin Rouge over the years. One of
the earliest was the French painter Henri de Toulouse Lautrec,
who befriended -- and painted -- many of the performers.
Today the Moulin Rouge
is still open for business and is more popular than ever thanks
in large part to the Oscar-nominated 2001 film starring Nicole
Kidman and Ewan McGregor.
