Financial Boot Camp
Day two: a monopoly on fun

Monopoly's a great way to get to know each other.
The second day of boot camp I join a Monopoly group. My Monopoly group includes Melody, Susan, Ive, and me.
The Real MonopolyMonopoly turns out to be a great way for us to get to know each other, and have free time to just talk.
One team keeps making up its own rules, which I think defeats the purpose of the game.
Another bunch of people keeps switching teams.
It's all fine with me—I think it's humorous.
Close As soon as we set up our game, we drop everything and head outside for PT. It's sharks and minnows!
Sharks and Minnows Two instructors in a sectioned-off area hold Frisbees. We're the minnows and have to run through the sectioned-off area without getting hit with a Frisbee.
We like this game so much we play it again, and this time we teenagers are both the minnows and the sharks.
The instructors have to referee to keep us from maiming each other! (Just kidding!)
Close Now it's time for the financial planning course. We start a Junior/Senior Year Expenses Project that gives us a look into our parents' wallets. I'm surprised to learn what they have to pay for us, for example prom, class ring, sports, and so on.
Financial PlanningFor us, financial planning means setting goals, learning the difference between needs and wants, and learning why we should be responsible with our money.

Careers:
The best career
First job interview
Your pay stub
Lunch time! We play a little Monopoly, and then move into the next session about careers.
The career example they gave me was one of the best because I made a lot of money and didn't have to work much!
Day three: whoops for hoops

Checkbook:
Balance it
Write checks
When we arrive we head straight for our Monopoly groups to continue the game and catch up with each other.
Our PT for that day is hula hoop! This is a team-building game that the guys resist at first.
Hula Hoop for the TeamThe staff form us into two lines. We have to hold hands and pass the hula hoop down the line without touching it with our hands.
You can guess that none of the boys want to hold hands with another boy!
They finally do it. In fact, we have so much fun we want to play it again!
Close At 9:30 a.m. we start with budgeting, then at 11 a.m. we take a break and start learning about different kinds of accounts. Then we take a tour to see the process that checks go through once MFCU receives them. We're put on trial for writing bad checks—checks we don't have money to cover in our checking accounts. It's not just a math mistake, it's illegal.
On Trial"Judge Al" comes in and holds a mock court for people who write bad checks. He's real serious and a few of us are a little worried!
I'm glad he's just acting!
Close After we work on our car-buying project some more, it's 3 p.m. and time to go.

Money:
Budget it
Get rich
Work Smart: Invest

Day four: the poorhouse dodge
Our PT today is dodge ball! We play several rounds before we have to go in.
Once we get inside we talk about the importance of saving, and how to become a millionaire starting with just a couple hundred dollars in the bank!
Noon means chow! Chow! Finally, chow time! Each day MFCU gave us something different: pizza, subs, chicken, and MREs—military Meals Ready to Eat.
Have you ever had an MRE? All I can say is we gave them a 50/50 rating. That's not too bad. Some of the kids seemed to turn green, but they survived.
The best lunch is on the last day. MFCU's CEO cooks hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill for the "troops." The hamburgers and hot dogs are definitely our favorite meal.
Close We work with investments from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., then take our leave for yet another day...
