Out of the 75 cadets, the commanders elect one cadet for "honor cadet."
One Gets Highest Honor
At Graduation all of the cadets are grouped into squads of about 15 or 16 and there are five squads. Although the program is co-ed, girls and boys can't be in the same squad.
One by one, they call the five squads to the front, recognizing each cadet for completing the training. Just making it through boot camp is an accomplishment—there are some who, for whatever reason, don't complete it.
Out of the 75 cadets graduating, the commanders elect one cadet for the highest honor, called "honor cadet." This cadet has:
- Stood out among his or her peers
- Shown heart and leadership
- Exemplified the meaning of teamwork by helping others make it through the week
- Achieved expert status in marksmanship and swim qualifications
That cadet is me!
I am shocked and excited, but mostly proud of myself for doing my best. My mom (and maybe even my dad) cries happy tears as I receive the highest honor. What a moment!
Personal Success
Since my boot camp experience, my self-confidence has soared. I feel like I have proven that I can do anything that I put my mind to. I have proven it to myself. A couple months later, I am awarded "cadet of the quarter" for my division and earn a scholarship for another specialized training.
Whether you are interested in a military career or just interested in getting skills that will benefit you for a lifetime, this program may be for you.
Ambition, effort, and dedication—that's what makes a naval sea cadet...that's what makes a successful person!
