New Coins Make Beautiful Music

Sometimes, we find music in the most interesting places. While it's not the same as plugging into your MP3, even the jingle of the right new coins in your pocket can be considered melodic.

That's especially true of new coins coming out this year and in 2009. New pennies and dollar coins for Presidents, First Ladies, Native Americans and US Territories will all arrive in the change you get at the movie theater, ice cream shop and vending machines.

This variety will easily mix up the harmony of your coin jar, coin purse or wallet. in your wallet.

New Pennies: copper rock & roll

The new pennies will arrive in 2009, just in time to celebrate the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth.

It's amazing to think that Lincoln would have been 200 years old in 2009. Plus, the year marks the 100th anniversary of the first Lincoln penny ever made.

Heads or tails, you'll rock with these shiny new pennies. Each one will have a special design on the "tails" side showing a different stage of Lincoln's life.  Read about the end of slavery in Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.

To give each of these pennies its time in the limelight, they'll be rolled out every three months.

For extra series "cent-ers," collectible versions will also be made with the same copper content as the first pennies made in 1909.

[Author, please give a brief explanation as to why same copper content is noteworthy, and what "extra series 'cent-ers" means.]

New dollar coins: oval office classical

Lincoln isn't the only president being honored with special coins. The presidential $1 coins that started arriving in 2007 stay on a roll in 2009, too.

The new dollar coins are being introduced in the order the presidents served in the White House. For the responsible role these men held as president, their coins might be considered "classical" music.

What do they all have in common? (Other than all being men that held one of the most respected jobs in the US?)

All the presidential coins have a special lady's image on the back. It's none other than the Statue of Liberty. The last time Lady Liberty was thanked on a coin was in 1997, when she appeared on the back of the American Eagle platinum coins.

Even more presidential coins will continue to be released, four a year, until 2016...
