Year of the ???
Until
the early 1900s, the Chinese culture used a very different calendar
than the one we presently use in western civilization. This ancient
calendar was based on the cycles of the moon, and repeated itself
every 12 years.
A dozen animals were chosen
to represent each year. Each animal description also is supposed
to say something about individuals born during that particular
phase of the moon.
While many Chinese no
longer take these animal descriptions seriously, they still use
their ancient calendar to celebrate various festive occasions,
such as the Chinese New Year, which falls somewhere between late
January and early February.
